Reckless driver hits, kills jogger in Wilmington

An auto accident involving a pedestrian is frightening because the victim stands little chance of escaping serious injury or death. Often they do not even realize what's happening until it is too late. And yet, like other places in the United States, death comes to North Carolina roadways with alarming frequency. On Oct. 17, a a 53-year-old Iowa man jogging at about 7 p.m. near the intersection of North College Road and Gordon Road in Wilmington, North Carolina, was hit and killed.

"Suspicious" marijuana charges for North Carolina man

A 24-year-old North Carolina resident is facing drug charges after a police officer allegedly witnessed the man throwing "suspicious" items out of his car. Those items are alleged to include baggies of marijuana, but neither the number of baggies nor the amount of any claimed marijuana has been revealed. Marijuana seeds were also allegedly found in the man's car, though the amount was withheld.

Former pro wrestler Matt Hardy facing drug charges

North Carolina resident and former pro wrestler Matt Hardy was recently arrested for the third time in a month -- this time for a litany of drug charges -- Moore County deputies announced on Sept. 20. In August, he was arrested for DWI after he allegedly struck a guard rail in Raleigh. In a separate incident, he was arrested for driving while impaired at the Raleigh-Durham International Airport on Sept. 15 when another driver complained that Hardy swerved across two lanes of traffic and almost struck two other vehicles.

Serious injuries sustained in accident with stolen dirt bike

On July 4, a dirt bike was reported stolen from the back of a pickup truck in Wilmington, North Carolina. And on Sept. 25, that bike was involved in a serious car accident, and charges are now pending against its 21-year-old driver. It's unknown whether or not the driver was involved in the theft of the dirt bike.

Car accident takes life of Brunswick County teen

It's common to see ambulances on the scene following a car accident, but earlier this month an ambulance was involved in an accident that took the life of a 19-year old college student. Police allege the ambulance driver ran a red light at the intersection of Highway 17 and Frontage Drive in Brunswick County around 9:30 a.m. on October 3, hitting the vehicle driven by the young woman who was headed to a college class. The ambulance driver is currently facing misdemeanor charges of death by vehicle as a result of the car accident.

Man, wife charged with drug trafficking in upscale neighborhood

Recently police executed a search warrant at a house in an upscale neighborhood in Union County. A news organization subsequently reported the police had intercepted a high-grade hydroponic marijuana-growing operation. A 44-year-old man and his 39-year-old wife were arrested and charged with felony charges of possession with intent to sell or deliver marijuana, possession of marijuana, and maintaining a dwelling to store or sell a controlled substance. While police assert the marijuana seized had a street value of $62,000, they did not disclose the amount of claimed marijuana on which they based that estimate.
