Man, wife charged with drug trafficking in upscale neighborhood

| Oct 6, 2011 | Drug Charges |

Recently police executed a search warrant at a house in an upscale neighborhood in Union County. A news organization subsequently reported the police had intercepted a high-grade hydroponic marijuana-growing operation. A 44-year-old man and his 39-year-old wife were arrested and charged with felony charges of possession with intent to sell or deliver marijuana, possession of marijuana, and maintaining a dwelling to store or sell a controlled substance. While police assert the marijuana seized had a street value of $62,000, they did not disclose the amount of claimed marijuana on which they based that estimate.

The arrests followed an unrelated incident that drew the attention of the community and authorities. About a week earlier in a neighborhood less than a mile away, police say a 19-year-old man was shot, leaving him seriously injured, in what they claim was a drug-related argument. The shooting prompted police to hold a community meeting, saying they would target drug activity in the area and asking residents to inform authorities of any drug activity. The arrest of the couple is said to have followed undisclosed tips, though it is not clear what those tips were or if they came from residents in response to the community meeting.

The couple now must face felony charges. They will need to dissect each part of the investigation and subsequent charges lodged against them. They can benefit from a strong defense, challenging any improper procedures and contesting any false or inaccurate information. A North Carolina attorney well-versed in handling defense of drug trafficking charges may provide support and help plan a course of action seeking fairness and a successful resolution.
