Federal drug charges brought against North Carolina woman

On Behalf of | Jun 1, 2011 | Federal Crimes |

Individuals charged with federal drug crimes face harsh penalties, from expensive fines to years of imprisonment. Currently, a woman is facing multiple federal drug charges and years in prison after being accused of the possession and distribution of prescription drugs in North Carolina.

The 42-year-old woman is accused of seven separate federal crimes, all relating to the possession and distribution of controlled substances. She has been charged with possessing and conspiring to distribute Hydrocodone, Oxycodone and Alprazolam, which are in the opiate family and used to treat pain and anxiety. She has been charged both individually and for conspiring with others to distribute the controlled substances over a four-year period in both Caldwell and Catawba counties, North Carolina. She is also facing charges for keeping three separate residences in order to distribute drugs in the areas.

The woman could be facing 140 years in prison and $4.75 million in fines if she is convicted and sentenced to the maximum penalty for each charge. While court appearances have yet to be scheduled, the woman is already jailed in connection with the September death of 10-year-old her stepdaughter.

The penalties for drug crimes vary, starting with monetary fines at one end of the spectrum and ending with imprisonment at the other. Being arrested for drug crimes can be a frightening experience. However, there may be effective ways to challenge the charges or reduce the penalties. Experienced North Carolina attorneys know that not everyone who is accused of a drug crime is guilty.
