Mother charged with driving while intoxicated in daughter's death

After a car accident, many people are quick to point their finger at someone and claim that person is at fault. The situation can become even more heightened when allegations of criminal activity surface. In one recent example, a North Carolina mother was behind the wheel in a tragic car accident that claimed the life of her 9-year-old daughter. Now that woman is facing charges of driving while intoxicated and reckless driving.

The woman, age 41, allegedly drove off the street and then back onto the street, crossing the center of the street in the process. At this point, her vehicle collided with a second vehicle. The woman's daughter, age nine, passed away at the scene of the crash. The woman, along with her son, age seven, suffered injuries in the fatal crash. Currently, the woman is listed in critical condition.

Accidents like this are always a tragedy. No child should have his or her life cut so brutally short. This girl's family is surely grieving their loss. However, one should not automatically assume that the accident occurred because the woman was drunk. There are many factors that could lead to a car crash, including weather conditions, road conditions, distractions and other unexpected and unavoidable events.

If a person is charged with drunk driving, he or she is likely to be in need of legal help. A criminal defense attorney may be able to help a person understand the criminal trial process when it comes to drunk driving charges and the options one has in such situations. A person grieving the loss of a child does not need the added stress of fighting accusations of drunk driving, particularly if they were not intoxicated when the accident occurred.
