North Carolina teen killed in fatal car accident

A 19-year-old North Carolina girl was killed last week in a two-car crash. The fatal car accident occurred in Elizabeth City at the intersection of Peartree Road and Pitts Chapel Road. According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the Virginia Beach teenager was turning when a pickup truck struck her vehicle on the driver's side.

She was first taken to Albemarle Hospital by ambulance, and then later flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The driver of the pickup truck was also injured. He was brought to the hospital where he was treated for his injuries and released. Police officials do not believe that speed or alcohol was a factor in the fatal car accident.

Residents complain that the intersection is dangerous, and they are concerned that more accidents will occur. Unfortunately, a similar fatal accident occurred at the same location only one-year ago. That accident involved a motorcycle. Several other serious motor vehicle accidents have occurred at the same intersection. In fact, during the five-year period from 2004 to 2009 there were 23 motor vehicle accidents at this particular intersection.

After last year's fatal motorcycle accident, the North Carolina Department of Transportation did add flashing lights to the stop signs in order to alert drivers as they approach the intersection. Apparently, the driver of the pickup truck failed to see both the stop sign and the flashing lights. Perhaps more warnings are necessary in order to prevent another fatal accident from occurring at this intersection.
