On May 9, it was reported that two men were taken into custody in North Carolina on drug trafficking charges following a traffic stop. The report stated that the authorities recovered heroin and cocaine from the vehicle.
Alamance County authorities conducted the traffic stop on NC Highway 62 near the county line. When they were searching the 2014 Toyota Camry, authorities reportedly seized about 99 grams of cocaine and 40 grams of heroin. They then took a 41-year-old South Carolina man and a 44-year-old Virginia man into custody. Both men are facing charges for trafficking cocaine, trafficking heroin and driving a vehicle on a suspended licence. They were taken to Alamance County Detention Center.
Depending on the type of drugs, the amount of each drug and prior arrests, the severity of the legal consequences that defendants could face if the prosecution is able to obtain on drug charges may vary. For example, a person who is a first-time offender may potentially be facing consequences that are less severe than someone who has multiple drug convictions, However, a first-time offender could still potentially be facing a lengthy prison sentence and major fines.
Because each case is different, people who have been accused of selling or possessing illegal substances should discuss their specific circumstances with a criminal law attorney. In some cases, the attorney may provide an aggressive defense for the client. In other cases, counsel may deem negotiating a plea deal with the prosecutor for less harsh penalties to be an effective solution.
