Charged in federal court? Contact lawyer quickly.

All drug charges should be taken seriously. While the penalties assessed if someone charged at the state level is found guilty of a drug crime could be life changing, this is even more likely when someone is charged with a federal drug crime. When someone is convicted of a federal crime, the consequences are usually much more severe than they would be for a similar charge in a state court. A North Carolina man is currently dealing with this very situation.

The man, who owns his own business, is accused of conspiring with others to ship large amounts of marijuana to North Carolina over the course of more than a year. Specifically he was charged with conspiracy to distribute and possess more than 50 kilograms. The man’s arrest was prompted at least in part by information provided by one of the two alleged co-conspirators, who was cooperating with the government.

Among other things, the man is accused of leasing private jets that the co-conspirators used to move the marijuana from various locations on the west coast, to North Carolina, for distribution. In exchange for orchestrating the transportation, he allegedly received profits from the distribution of the marijuana as well as reimbursements for the money he spent on leasing the jets.

Individuals facing federal charges need to make sure that they are working with a lawyer who has a thorough understanding of the federal court system. There are multiple reasons for this including the fact that these cases generally proceed at a quicker pace than lower courts. This means that it is imperative that an accused and his or her lawyer work quickly to gather evidence to build a defense. The sooner an accused contacts an attorney who handles federal cases, the better.
