Drunk driving accident injures several; DUI, speeding the cause?

One person is in critical condition and another is in hospital after a driver careened into a tractor trailer. The accident, which happened in the early hours of June 20, blocked traffic for several hours while North Carolina police reconstructed the scene. The suspected drunk driving accident is still under investigation at the time of this writing.

Police indicate the driver of the vehicle was operating at unsafe speeds when he rammed into a tractor trailer on Interstate 77. Crime scene specialists estimate the vehicle was traveling in excess of 100 miles per hour when the driver lost control of the car. The vehicle hit a wall, crossed over into oncoming traffic, and struck the truck.

Of the three passengers in the car, one suffered life threatening injuries according to arriving medical personnel, while a second was also transported to hospital with injuries described as non-life threatening. There is no word on the condition of the third party, or whether one of the injured parties was in fact the driver. There is also no word on the condition of the tractor trailer driver. The driver of the car has been charged with one count of DWI and one count of operating a vehicle at unsafe speeds.

A drunk driving accident can have potentially disastrous consequences for the driver and anyone else involved. Should it prove true that the driver of the car was intoxicated, he or she could face additional censure both from the trucking company that owns the tractor trailer as well as from the injured passengers in the car. The injured parties would be entitled to file personal injury suits against the driver - as well as the employer -- in a North Carolina civil court.
