U.S. Marine dies in North Carolina car accident

On Behalf of | May 20, 2013 | Car Accidents |

Charges have been filed in the death of a United States Marine who was killed in a car crash on May 4. Police say the officer, who was stationed here in North Carolina, was killed when his motorcycle was struck by another vehicle. The driver, a Newport resident, was arrested in connection with the car accident.

Police say the 21-year-old corporal was stationed at the Cherry Point air corps station. He was driving his motorcycle outside of Newport when he was struck by another vehicle. He was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

Little is known of the other driver, a local North Carolina man, but the individual was charged this week with failure to yield and misdemeanor death by vehicle. It is unclear whether the man remains in police custody or whether he has been released on bail. No court date has yet been set in this case.

This tragic car accident claimed the life of a promising young man at the beginning of his career serving his country, and while North Carolina law enforcement has already filed criminal charges in the pursuit of justice, the family of this young man may wish to seek additional compensation in civil court. A wrongful death suit would benefit from a comprehensive understanding of North Carolina law, as well as the full details of the accident. While fiscal compensation will not replace what the family has lost, it may be helpful in the grieving process and ensure justice is carried out to its fullest extent.
