2 men face violent crime charges after Wilmington standoff

A gunfire exchange with Wilmington police has led to two men facing criminal charges. The altercation began when officers pulled the man's vehicle over. Information received led them to believe the man had a passenger inside wanted on violent crime charges. Once officers approached the vehicle, the passenger exited the vehicle and fled the scene.

Other officers engaged the driver, who initially cooperated with them. However, when they attempted to arrest him, he struggled, pulled out a weapon and fled. Once officers saw the man was armed, they began to fire.

As the accused was fleeing, he accidentally ran into the officer who was attempting to catch the other suspect. More shots were fired between the two, but the man reportedly was able to escape to a shed where he stayed for several hours in a tense standoff with police. Authorities were able to apprehend him once they fired tear gas. The other man was eventually located. Both are now facing multiple violent crime charges that include assault with the intent to kill and possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.

Violent crime charges may end in significant jail time if a conviction is obtained. In view of the seriousness of the allegations, anyone so accused may gain by first consulting legal counsel. Any statements made to authorities could work against someone in court, no matter how insignificant the statement appears. Seeking assistance can help Wilmington residents mount a valid and relevant defense while ensuring that all legal rights that automatically attach to anyone accused of committing a crime are fully protected.
