North Carolina driver charged after deadly car accident

A former North Carolina high school athlete is facing criminal charges after a crash that killed two of his former teammates. The car accident occurred while the driver was reportedly under the influence of alcohol. The teammates were passengers inside of the vehicle when it apparently slipped off of the road and struck a tree. The driver and two other occupants of the vehicle were seriously injured but have since recovered.

Prior to the crash, it is believed he was closing his eyes while traveling at a high rate of speed. Others inside the vehicle were shown in a video filmed shortly before the accident reportedly smoking marijuana. Later tests confirmed the driver was under the influence of the drug.

He is now facing charges of driving while impaired, driving recklessly and causing death with a vehicle. The accident occurred last July, and it appears he was not arrested until recently. His bond has been established at $30,000. The accused had just completed his first year at a university in Ohio.

When a fatal car accident is caused by the negligence of another, North Carolina families reserve the right to seek justice in the form of a wrongful death lawsuit. Although he is facing criminal charges now for his role in this deadly crash, the family has the right to pursue its own lawsuit in civil court. Families can seek monetary damages based upon evidence that the deaths were caused by another's negligence. Doing so will not bring someone back, but it could make the surviving family members feel that they have done all in their power to achieve full accountability and justice on behalf of their loved one.
