A North Carolina man has been accused of driving drunk after being involved in a car accident that took the life of a pedestrian. The crash is currently being investigated, but the man has been arrested and is now facing drunk driving charges. Before being taken to jail, the man was transported to a local hospital to undergo a blood draw.
The accident occurred in the early morning hours Dec. 7 in northeast Charlotte when a pedestrian was crossing the road at an intersection and was struck by a Volvo. The driver stopped at the scene and attempted to call for help, according to a news report.
The pedestrian did not survive.
When officers arrived at the scene they believed that the driver showed signs of impairment.
The driver was not injured in the crash. The dog that the pedestrian was walking was injured, and was transported to a facility to receive treatment for a broken leg.
There is a possibility the driver could face additional charges after the conclusion of the accident investigation, though that remains to be seen.
Being charged with a drunk driving offense can be a very difficult time for those accused. Drunk driving accusations, especially when a fatality has occurred, can result in very serious consequences.
It is always important to remember, even in serious cases, that defendants are innocent until proven guilty. It is generally in the interest of DUI defendants to seek legal counsel and prepare a vigorous defense to ensure that their rights are protected.
