Passenger dies in Brunswick auto accident

A serious car accident caused a man's death when the vehicle in which he was riding was hit by an SUV. The man, a passenger in the car, was killed on Monday, Feb. 6. According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the man's wife was driving on U.S. 17 near Supply in Brunswick County when she attempted to turn left into a parking lot. The accident occurred when an SUV struck their vehicle.

The man was transported to the Brunswick Novant Medical Center but died shortly after 4 p.m. Authorities indicated he had been wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. A Highway Patrol spokesman stated that he did not know if either woman was injured. The accident remains under investigation, and at the time of the news story, no charges had been filed.

Motorists driving in the Brunswick area are entitled to feel safe on the road. Drivers should operate their vehicles with constant awareness and responsibility and with a duty of reasonable care to others in or near the roadway. As police continue to investigate this accident, the family of the deceased victim may be entitled to seek wrongful death compensation against any parties whose negligence caused or contributed to the fatal accident.

North Carolina law specifically provides for the right of surviving family members to sue for a wrongful death that has occurred. The term applies to any fatality that is caused by the negligent or reckless conduct of another. While the law cannot make full amends for the tragic accident, it can offer some measure of justice by holding responsible parties accountable and providing for the right to pursue monetary relief when warranted.
