James is a Wilmington native and graduate of New Hanover High School. He completed undergraduate work at UNC-Chapel Hill and UNC-Wilmington, and received his law degree from UNC-Chapel Hill. As an attorney with more than a decade of courtroom experience, James focuses his practice on state and federal criminal defense as well as civil litigation. As a former state prosecutor (Assistant District Attorney, 5th District, Wilmington, NC), he prosecuted countless criminal cases ranging from Driving While Impaired, Larceny, Drug Possession/Distribution and Embezzlement to Robbery, Felonious Assault and Murder. James is also a former federal prosecutor. Appointed as a Special Assistant United States Attorney, he was charged with prosecuting misdemeanors and serious felony cases that occurred in the Eastern District of North Carolina. In addition to his extensive legal experience, James is also a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, attaining the rank of Captain on active duty.

James is a member of the Federal  Criminal Justice Act Panel.  Attorneys on the panel are assigned to represent people charged with federal crimes, that are financially unable to afford counsel.  Admission to the panel requires approval by members of the Federal Judiciary after recommendation from the Panel Admissions Committee.
