Paramedics respond to fatal car accident in North Carolina

One man is dead and another is injured following a serious crash in Catawba County on Sept. 30, according to local law enforcement. North Carolina State Troopers are still trying to piece together the cause of the car accident. Witnesses are still being questioned in connection with this case.

So far, police have determined that a vehicle driven by a local resident was traveling along Long Island road when the driver ran a stop sign. The vehicle then struck another car. Witnesses say the driver who ran the stop sign was attempting to negotiate a left-hand turn at the time of the crash, but they did not see any brake lights signifying the vehicle had slowed or stopped.

The driver of the first vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene by arriving medical personnel. The driver of the second vehicle was transported to a local hospital with injuries of an indeterminate level of severity. Police have not speculated as to whether or not alcohol or high speeds were factors in this accident, and they have filed no charges against the surviving driver.

North Carolina traffic law is relatively clear-cut on the subject of stop signs -- every driver is required by law to obey all posted signs on state roadways. If it is determined that the driver who allegedly ran the stop sign was responsible for breaking a traffic law, the surviving driver may wish to file a personal injury law suit against the deceased driver's estate. This will depend on the severity of the injuries sustained in the car accident, and any such suit would be handled in a civil court setting.
