A serious accident has left a high school student in a medically-induced coma, according to local sources. The North Carolina teen is in critical condition after a late-evening car accident on Aug. 23. No charges have yet been filed in connection with this case, and police are still investigating the particulars of the crash.
Sources report the boy, a 17-year-old student at a local high school, was driving his motorized scooter around 10 p.m. when he collided sidelong with a car. The specifics of this collision are unclear as of this writing, but the force of the impact was enough to throw the boy from his scooter and onto the ground. Arriving medical personnel rushed him to a local hospital.
There, it was discovered he had suffered a severe head injury that was causing his brain to swell. Attendant physicians medically induced a coma in order to help stem the damage caused by the swelling. The boy is still in his coma state at the time of this article, and family and friends have set up a donation fund in his name. Police have made no arrests and filed no charges as yet in this case.
A car accident of this type is even more tragic because of the age of the young person injured. Should the North Carolina police investigation conclude the driver was responsible for the collision, they will likely file criminal charges against him or her. In addition, the family of the injured boy will be entitled to seek a personal injury law suit against the driver, to be filed separately from criminal charges, in a civil court.
