A single-vehicle accident on a North Carolina highway on June 5 has left one man dead and two women clinging to life. The car accident happened in the afternoon on a North Carolina county road. Police are continuing an investigation into the cause of the crash.

Reports indicate a 66-year-old woman was driving a minivan with two passengers, when her vehicle left the road and collided with a tree. The front-seat passenger, a 67-year-old man, was killed immediately and pronounced dead by arriving medical personnel. Both the driver and the other passenger, who was in the back seat at the time of the accident, sustained critical injuries. Both were airlifted to a local hospital.

Local residents called 911 after the crash took place. It is unclear according to police what may have led the vehicle to leave the road, though they have said speed was not a factor. It is possible that simple inattention may have been the culprit, though further investigation will be required to make that determination.

Police note that all three occupants of the vehicle were family members, but as North Carolina residents are sure to know, this does not preclude individuals from seeking remuneration from one another. In the case of this car accident, the surviving family of the deceased passenger may wish to file a wrongful death suit against the driver, should it be determined that a failure to observe the road was the cause of the accident. The injured passenger would have the same rights in terms of a personal injury suit through civil court.
