3 men facing drug charges for selling cocaine in Wilmington

Drug charges are taken very seriously in the New Hanover area as three men are now finding out. The men, ages 24, 27 and 32, are facing drug charges after an investigation by the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office. The investigation is ongoing and began in January, eventually leading to the arrests.

Police believe the men were involved in the sale of considerable amounts of cocaine in the Wilmington area. They are allegedly involved in a large drug trafficking ring, focusing on cocaine specifically. The sheriff's department has been working in conjunction with federal agencies to assist in any follow-up investigations involving the drug ring.

All three men are facing charges of cocaine trafficking. However, each of these men is innocent until proven guilty. Knowing their legal rights as they pertain to the drug charges against them can only benefit them if they seek to answer these charges in a court of law.

A drug trafficking conviction can have serious penalties. Punishment for the drug offenses depends upon the type of drug, how much was found and if the charges were filed in state or federal court. A conviction in New Hanover can lead to a stiff jail sentence and, for these men who are Mexican citizens, the additional possibility of deportation. However, an accusation is not a conviction.

Others in North Carolina should know that there are ways to get a head start if you think you may be under investigation. As we saw in this case, police and federal authorities often spend months or longer investigating people they believe to be involved in drug crimes. If you suspect you are being investigated, you can seek legal help, even if you haven't been charged. The best way to protect your freedom is to understand your rights.
