A car accident claimed the life of a popular Wilmington elementary school teacher earlier this month. The 62-year-old third grade teacher was killed in a wreck on North College Road near Northchase Parkway.
An oncoming vehicle crossed the center line and struck the teacher’s vehicle. The other driver did not sustain any serious injury. Unfortunately, moments after the initial accident, the teacher’s car was hit by another vehicle. The 22-year veteran of Wrightsboro Elementary School later died in the hospital as a result of her injuries. The Highway Patrol reported that the driver of the first car has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle. There is no evidence that alcohol or drugs were involved in the accident.
The school and the people of Wilmington are mourning their loss after the tragic death. Former students recalled a warm, funny woman who rewarded her students with candy for a job well done, while parents lamented the loss not just for their own children, but for the children who will come along after theirs. As a mother, grandmother and teacher, the woman’s death will be felt for years to come. However, her family may be able to seek some measure of recourse with the help of a lawyer experienced in handling claims arising from motor vehicle accidents.
The party responsible for the teacher’s death has already been criminally charged in this case, but the victim’s family may also be in line for compensation in a wrongful death civil action against the person responsible for the accident.
